Nokwethemba Mchunu – born 17 February 1989 – is a South African poet, memoirist, philanthropist, Inspirational Speaker, and Voice over Artist. Her success in poetry has earned her several awards namely, two Crown Gospel Music Awards for “Best Gospel Poet” in 2014 and 2017, and the Woman to Woman award for “Most Influential Woman” in 2015.
Nokwethemba is best known for her series of inspirational, trendy gospel poems published on Joyous Celebration from Joyous Celebration Volume 18 to Volume 21. Her journey to being South Africa’s leading poet began with her signature poem, “God is a Brand” (2014) which introduced her to the world. This poem illustrates the greatness and splendor of God through the use of popular brand names and slogans. She has graced the stage with her gift of poetry at many prestigious and prominent platforms in and out of South Africa and has received invites to render her poetry at Parliament in Cape Town, South Africa.
She has even recited at the world – renowned Moses Mabhida Stadium for a crowd of over 20 000. In 2016, Nokwethemba tapped into the international market where she recited her poem “We won’t lose our Praise” at Bishop TD Jakes’ church, The Potter’s House in Dallas Texas.
She became a poet and writer as a young adult, and to date, she is still a feature on Africa’s leading Gospel ensemble MTN Joyous Celebration. She has also worked as a Revenue and Credit Management Assistant at one of Southern Africa’s largest companies, Eskom Holdings; where they also trained her as a Communications officer and a Logistics Assistant. Nokwethemba has founded her own company, which deals with facilitation of communication at its core.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Finance and Supply Chain Management from the University of KwaZulu Natal, and as a student, she displayed leadership qualities by holding the office of Social Development Coo-ordinator for the Student Christian Fellowship. She was also Head Mentor in 2009 and was founder of “UKZN Men’s Forum” an organisation founded by her with the sole purpose of raising a generation of responsible, God fearing men in society. As an established poet, in 2015, she founded a youth network which focuses on aiding young people to find their identities, their voice in society, and to cultivate the spirit of giving back to the disadvantaged in their local communities.
